Crisis Alert

Our group is facing a serious crisis as our long serving and very efficient treasurer Frank Atherton has announced that he will be standing down from his role as Group Treasurer at the next Annual General Meeting In November.

Frank has done a magnificent job in managing the Groups finances during the past sixteen years and his steady hand on the financial tiller will be missed.

Frank announced his desire to stand down from this role three years ago and has restated this emphatically on numerous occasions since.

He wishes to make it clear that come what may, he will be standing down in November.

The Group cannot continue without a Treasurer and we face the stark reality of the danger that the Group will have to disband unless a member is willing to come forward and take up the baton.

Frank will give more detailed information on the duties and responsibilities of the role and would be willing to train anyone prepared to come forward to take over the position.

I would ask every member to seriously consider if they would be able to come forward and keep our group together.

Wigan Ramblers organise walks 12 months a year, these include family footpath walks, 4, 8 and 12 miles coach rambles and longer rambles.

Our local footpath walks are easy rambles in and around Wigan of 3½ - 4½ miles. They start at 14:00 and finish around 16:15 to 16:30 or a little earlier in winter. These are free of charge.  The local footpath walks are an ideal way to introduce new members and to discover miles of footpaths around Wigan, which you might never have walked before.

Our coach rambles are usually split into two groups, one group walking for 4 - 5 miles and the other group walking 8 miles.  The coach rambles cost £10 for members and £13 for non-members.

Over the years our Group has enjoyed many varied coach rambles, local footpath walks and away weekends.  In order to continue this successful venture our Committee would appreciate more active support to keep the Group going.

There have been comments that our walks have become a bit repetitive.  It would be nice if a few people, not all necessarily Committee members, would be prepared to meet on a six-monthly basis to suggest, and/or volunteer to lead, coach ramble and local footpath walks and to assist with the formulation of the programme of walks.  If you feel nervous about leading a walk, help and support is available.

All our walks are listed here on the Ramblers Website
