Penkridge 2015 - Frank Atherton

The 2015 Spring walking holiday started with a frustrating journey down the M6, where long delays met us on the way to Stafford, whilst the Northbound carriageway was at a standstill due to a serious accident.  Trafalgar had sent a small coach for 25 of us and after an uncomfortable journey we were glad to reach Penkridge and go to our rooms.  We were happily settled down and unpacked in time for dinner at 7 p.m.

On Saturday after waiting for the 76 bus, which didn’t arrive, Frank Atherton led a group of 18 on a 5 mile walk via the village of Acton Trussell and over some awkward stiles to enjoy lunch at Bednall.  They followed part of the Staffordshire Way along Cock Lane and through Teddesley Park Estate to join the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal at Park Gate Lock.  A stroll along the canal to The Boat pub for a welcome drink and so back to the hotel.

On Sunday John Lenagan led a party of 29 on a walk of about 4.5 miles, first of all to the canal and then to bridge 89.  The paths around the fields of northern Penkridge involved several stiles and electric fences.  A short walk along Cannock Road led back to the pub and the hotel.

After dinner Margaret Atherton had arranged Showtime, which included “Madame Mimi’s outrageous can-can dancers”.  We all enjoyed an amazing show of the hidden talents of the Wigan Ramblers and we had to thank Margaret for all of her hard work.

John Pimblett had again arranged a very enjoyable weekend and the weather had been ideal for walking.
